A sample size of 3250 voters was used to determine the outcome of 1948 election between Harry Truman and Thomas Dewey. The poll results predicted victory for republican candidate Dewey by 50% compared to Truman’s 44% and 6% for other candidates. However, unlike in the previous successful predictions, the results turned out to be almost exactly reverse. Truman won with 50% compared to Dewey’s 45% and 5% for other candidates (Friedenson, 2009). So sure was Chicago Tribune of Dewey’s victory that they went on press with headline ‘’Dewey defeats Truman” before the official results were released. The outcome of the election uncovered the faults of relying on quota sampling as a method of sampling.
