Political or citizen participation is required in democratic societies. It is the critical link between people and their government. Participation provides an opportunity for citizens to exercise their political voice by expressing their policy preferences and to act on their preferences through casting their ballots. Citizens can communicate directly by contacting their legislators, voting, campaign contributions, and being members of special interest groups. These are the mechanism by which citizens communicate their interests, preferences, and needs and generate pressure from our elected or appointed officials to respond.
