Showing relevance is one of the most difficult tasks that any professor of literature faces. Having studied literature from junior high school on many students feel that continues study (college level) is of little value, time consuming and costly. I mean how will the study of Beowulf, Hemingway, Maya Angelou make one a more accomplished, more effective nurse, state trooper, accountant? Your task–take a position that there is or is not a legitimate reason why students at the college level should study fiction, poetry, drama…and construct a brief response essay titled literature…why bother?
